Overview

The Introduction of Department of Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Engineering.

Overview

The National Sun Yat-Sen University is located in Kaohsiung, the industrial center of Taiwan. Since mechanical engineering is so-called “mother of industry”, in order to meet the demand of engineers for industrial development, the Department of Mechanical Engineering was founded in 1982, at the initial stage of the University. The Master program and the Ph.D. program were then established in 1983 and 1986, respectively. Since then, the Department plays a significant role in southern Taiwan on professionals cultivation, promotion of research and development, and industry upgrading. In response to the rapid progress on science and technology, a new title for the Department, Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Engineering, was also approved in 2001. The Department actively moulds cutting-edge engineers by educating students with the state-of-the-art technologies, especially on "Production Automation", "Energy Saving, Development and Management" and "Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems" to fulfill the need of future development of industries.
For the purpose of reaching international standards of educational quality, the Department had been certified through accreditation of IEET, a Full Signatory of the Washington Accord, in 2007 and 2014. Furthermore, we also received the Outstanding Mechanical Organization Award from Kaohsiung Branch of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2008 and 2013.

Programs

The Department of Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the field of mechanical engineering. These programs are designed to educate the students in the latest methods of engineering practice and to provide them with the fundamental discipline for continued growth throughout their professional careers.

Research Areas

The Department of Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Engineering offers five fields for students: Thermofluid, Solid Mechanics, Control, Design and Manufacturing, and Micro-nano System.

Thermofluid Division

The main courses of the thermofluid field cover basic researches and engineering applications in intermediate and advanced levels. The former contain thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and combustion engineering, etc. These courses provide students to establish theoretical foundation of thermo-fluid system, as well as the necessary professional knowledge in aerospace and automobile industries, rotational machines, heat exchange system and refrigeration and air-conditioning technologies. The latter are practical courses including power plants, internal combustion engines, solar energy engineering, combustion engineering, heat exchanger system design, refrigeration and air conditioner engineering, etc. With theoretical and practical knowledge from these courses, students shall be qualified as an expert and a future vanguard in mechanical engineering industries.

 Solid Mechanics Division

Basically, the related research is based on mathematical analysis, numerical simulation and experimental observation manner. The objects of study are covering from hundreds atoms thickness thin films or micro-accelerometers to aircrafts or buildings. And the materials of study include metal, polymer, ceramic materials, composite materials and semiconductor materials, etc. In the solid mechanics division, a wide range of courses and support are provided for students to develop wider talents and to enrich their experience. Faculty and expertise now spread across 7 research groups for undergraduate and postgraduate students to work alongside each other as shown below. We are sharing knowledge, ideas and technology to tackle answers to the scientific topics and issues. You are welcome to our division and we encourage you to learn from our world-class experts with so many discoveries happening all around you. Stress analysis is an engineering discipline that applies physical principles and concepts to determine the behaviours, such as stresses and strains, in solid objects subjected to external factors, including mechanical loads, temperature, electric field and magnetic field. Various approaches, for example the mathematical analysis, numerical simulation and experimental observations, have or are being utilised frequently to analyse properties and responses of deformable objects from either the prospect of top-down or bottom-up scale.

Control Division

Most basic and core courses of electrical engineering field, the mechatronics related disciplines and a number of new mechanical and electrical technologies are included in our courses. The teachers’ research areas covered in this group are: physiological signal analysis, digital signal processing, neural network pattern identification, electric vehicle development, human-machine systems, automated precision machining, mechanical and electrical integration systems, biomedical aids systems, advanced sensing and control technology, intelligent automatic control, and other technologies. The courses of this group can nurture our students to be good application or R & D engineers about mechatronics, related equipments and processes.

Design and Manufacturing Division

In design and manufacturing area, we train our students to possess abilities which contain theory and technology about design and manufacturing mechanical and electrical products. These abilities include analysis of mechanical systems, design and manufacturing, measurement, and computer-aided design and manufacturing.  So that our students after graduation can engage in research and development of mechanical design and manufacturing in the fallowing fields: machinery industry, automobile industry, high-tech industries, green energy industry, etc.The expertise of our teachers covers almost all important mechanical design and manufacturing science and technology such as: mechanical processing machinery design, tribology engineering, precision mechanical system design, creative mechanism design, automation machine design, CNC multi-axis machining technology, etc.

Micro-Nano Systems Division

Today, our country is in a transition period of industrial technology upgrading. In order to fit national needs and considering our own condition, we choose the areas "production automation", “energy conservation, development and management” and "MEMS" as the focus to be developed. Micro-Nano Systems is the professional knowledge covering mechanical, electrical, biomedical, film, electronics, micro-energy and other areas expertise. And this also an integrated technology basing on micro-sensors, micro actuators, microelectronic mechanical systems, microscopy systems, biomedical microfluidic chips and micro-processing technology, etc. After the semiconductor industry, MEMS has become a newly integrated Interdisciplinary science and technology that is being pursued by industrial countries. Micro-Nano Systems Group will focus on nanotechnology combining with MEMS technology. This combination will become the key technology to develop high-tech products in twenty-first century. And this will also bring in huge value and have great potential of the international market. With first order teachers and equipment, we foster our students with interdisciplinary and completely knowledge to meet the need of future nanotechnology development.

Future

The experts and specialists of mechatronics, electronic packaging, computer languages, interface, network, microprocessor, precision measurement and manufacturing are recruited to be our faculty members.
